Origins of the Sanctuary
The history of the Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona dates back to the 13th century, when the first chapel was built on this site to provide shepherds and travelers crossing Mount Baldo with a place for reflection and prayer. At that time, access was possible only via steep and difficult paths, emphasizing the site’s isolation and encouraging spiritual contemplation.
According to legend, in 1522 a statue of the Pietà, brought from the island of Rhodes, miraculously appeared at the sanctuary. This event drew widespread attention and transformed the site into an important pilgrimage destination.
The statue depicting the Madonna holding the body of Christ became the symbol of the sanctuary and an object of deep devotion for believers.
